This is one of those local treasures you drive by all the time but never stop. The stone monument is the actual site of the Spindletop well, which is the first huge oil well in Texas. The derrick in the background is a replica of what was used back in 1901. It was a nice little history lesson in Beaumont for a Friday afternoon.
